ABOUT DR MUHAMMED ZAID HOOSEN

Dr Hoosen’s ethos
Each breath is a gift, nourishing the body and mind with rhythmic surety. To practise Pulmonology is to aid in this process, requiring knowledge not only of the lungs but of every organ it feeds. The human body is a masterpiece of intricacies, all intertwined and in a symphony. Whatever the presentation, a patient requires holistic, evidence-based management to remedy not only the symptom but also restore every aspect of their well-being.

Dr Hoosen chose pulmonology because of the fascinating mix of physiology, anatomy and chemistry in a single breath. And he chose medicine because human resilience against disease and adversity is even more interesting. To assist others in this struggle will always be his greatest privilege.

Dr Muhammed Zaid Hoosen is from Durban. He completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in 2009 at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. After his community service at Kimberley Hospital, he returned home, joining the Department of Internal Medicine at RK Khan and later King Edward Hospital. His passion for complex medical problem-solving led him to pursue specialist training in Internal Medicine, and he obtained his Fellowship of the College of Physicians (FCP) with UKZN while concurrently completing a Masters in Medicine (MMed) through his research and publication on Type 1 Diabetes. In 2020, he joined the Respiratory Unit at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, where he completed his subspeciality training in Pulmonology.

Dr Hoosen has multiple journal publications and over 14 years of experience treating medical patients. His postgraduate education includes training and experience in critical care, endocrinology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, haematology, nephrology, cardiology, pulmonology, geriatrics and general medicine. While in public service, he remained an honorary academic coordinator at UKZN, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in both internal medicine and pulmonology.

He has previously worked as a Specialist Physician at RK Khan Hospital and as a Pulmonologist at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. He is a member of the South African Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society.

Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts.
